I'm so glad to see someone else who 'knows' how to crochet crochet this way, I also tried to hold my thread the 'correct' way and it just didn't work. I felt like I had no control. Its nice to know I'm not alone. :)

I'm so glad I saw this and know now that it's ok to let that index finger down! I've recently taken up crocheting again after learning the basics as a kid, but oh man has my index finger been aching from holding it straight out so rigidly like I was taught to hold it! I don't have chronic arthritis, but I have a suspicion if I kept up with this hobby holding my yarn/thread the way I initially learned I'd end up with it in my left pointer finger before long. So even if it is a bit strange and slower at first to change hand positions I'm thinking it will be a good payoff in the end to switch holding styles. Thank you for so clearly explaining and showing your way of holding your crochet work and thread.
