What is Worsted Weight Yarn?

Worsted Weight Yarn is a yarn with a firm, smooth finish. The term worsted originates from Norfolk, England.

Teresa, wondering if you can post why some yarns are called worsted but they are lighter than other yarns. For instance, if you take Red Heart, it's thicker and heavier than Caron Simply Soft. Why is that and what is the "true" worsted out of the two?

Thanks!

Forgot to add, do you find a difference in worsted for different fibers, such as wool vs. acrylic vs. cotton?

Thanks again,
